VIEWERS might recognise a few familiar sights during the latest series of BBC2’s Great British Railway Journeys.

Presenter Michael Portillo is embarking on another railway journey and once again he’s armed with his early 20th-century guide.

But he’s not just following in the footsteps – and train tracks – of Bradshaw’s famous guide.

Instead, he’s recreating a royal tour made by King George V, which took the monarch through Britain’s industrial heartland.

It is a trip that begins in Warrington, which was then billed as the gateway to Lancashire.

Former MP Portillo learns about the excitement that surrounded the monarch’s arrival and the reception that was laid on for the royal party in the parlour of Warrington’s Town Hall.

Filming in the town took place in May with Janice Hayes, Culture Warrington’s heritage manager invited to share her knowledge of the historic visit.

From there, it’s on to Huyton and the seat of the Stanley family, Knowsley Hall, where King George V and Queen Mary were accommodated in style – and where the 19th Earl of Derby takes Michael on a behind-the-scenes tour.

Great British Railway Journey premiered in 2010 on BBC2, and has returned every year for a total of nine series.

Warrington’s place in railway history will feature during its 10th series.

Tune in to Great British Railway Journeys on BBC2 at 6.30pm on Monday.
