RESIDENTS will fight ‘sickening’ plans to demolish a 450-year-old village pub to pave the way for 10 houses.

Osborne and Co has put forward a scheme to build the homes at the site of the sixteenth century Raven Inn in Glazebury.

If the application is approved by the council, it would see the three-bedroom homes and mews properties built on the land at Warrington Road.

In documents submitted with the application, it states the ‘neglected and run-down pub’ cannot be developed and that housing would bring the land back into use.

The developer adds that retaining the historic building is not an option due to viability reasons.

But the public have launched a campaign to save it from being bulldozed.

And an application to list the site has been submitted to Historic England.

Glazebury resident Paul Waterworth was left shocked after finding out about the controversial blueprints for the building, which closed as a pub last year.

He also claims the proposals are ‘driven by money’.

“I read some of the lies put to the council and the matter gained a lot of momentum after I ranted about it on Facebook,” he added.

“There were hundreds of comments posted by residents, which shows the level of disdain.

“It is sickening. It would be a huge loss.

“Ultimately, the pub is not in a derelict condition or run down.

“It is in a fantastic condition and should be protected.”

A meeting to discuss the issue will be held at Culcheth High School in a conference room from 4pm on Friday.
