But now it's been 10 years this week since Woolworths, or Woolies as it was often more affectionately known, closed its doors in Northwich.

The home of everything from toys to kitchen and dining equipment, gardening supplies and sweet treats was one of the country's oldest chains.

And in Northwich, having been open since 1926, generations of families had worked at the store. 

But around Christmas 2008, it was announced it was laden with debt and at the time it collapsed it owed £385m.

Store closures across the country left 27,000 people out of a job at the start of 2009 and 815 empty stores on the high street.

The Guardian reported a 'sad day for the town' at the time in January 2009.

Since the collapse, the majority of units have been taken over by discount chains with Northwich's shop in Witton Street becoming home to Quality Save soon after the closure in 2009.

Poundland owns the biggest number of ex-Woolworth premises, followed by food chain Iceland and discount homewares store chain B&M Bargains, according to research company Radius.
