THE John Douglas Heritage Centre was officially opened on Sunday.

Town mayor Cllr Gina Lewis and John Tweed of Tweed Nuttall Warburton Architecture attended the ceremony which marks the completion of major repairs to the roof.

The centre celebrates the life and works of one of Cheshire’s most famous architects John Douglas, who was born and raised in nearby Sandiway.

The Heritage Lottery Fund awarded money towards the repairs to help preserve this Victorian church dating back to the mid 1860s.

The church, an iconic Winsford landmark on Swanlow Lane, is a Grade II listed building.

There will be a display of many of John Douglas's local designs found in Winsford, Whitegate and Sandiway and also Chester where much of his work was completed.

The history of Over United Reform Church will also be on show alongside artefacts relating to the church and John Douglas.

Special days will be publicised during 2019 when guided and non-guided tours of the church can be made when the John Douglas Heritage Centre will also be open to the public.

Church secretary Ros Ellison said: “We hope that the new centre will be of value to local schools and colleges, historical societies and the wider public.

"Together with our planned church tours we hope that we can raise the knowledge and interest in one of Cheshire’s most respected Victorian architects.”
