Two thirds of those driving past Bussage Primary School have exceeded the speed limit, an electronic road sign has revealed.

The data comes after Chalford Parish Council received funding from Gloucestershire's police chief for a vehicle activated sign which either gives drivers a happy or sad face or tells them their speed.

It also logs speed and councillors have been constantly moving the sign around the parish in the hope of stopping motorists becoming complacent.

One of the spots has been on The Ridgeway, near the main entrance of Bussage Primary School.

It has so far logged 8214 vehicle movements away from Toadsmoor, 5290 of which were over the speed limit.

That is roughly 64% of drivers.

It also found five vehicles travelled in excess of 60mph at the start and end of the school day.

"The Ridgeway is not unique as elsewhere in the parish we have logged speeds in the high 70s and low 80s with well over half of the motorists exceeding the speed limit," said parish chair councillor Paul Lilly.

"Since we have started monitoring speeds and moving the sign around the parish we have seen a slight drop in overall speeds but nothing really to shout about.

"We publish the data on Facebook, in our parish newsletter and on our website."

Use of the signs is growing in the district, with Stroud Town Council recently put up four of their own signs.
