VOLUNTEERS can help to brighten up the environment.

The newly formed Friends of Winsford Town Park is holding an activity session with horticulturalist Jo Fawcett, who designed the park's planting scheme.

The team will be planting spring bulbs along the woodland path leading in from Clough Road from 10.30am to 1pm on Thursday, November 15.

There will also be a chance to continue with light weeding around the edges of the ponds.

Group chairman John Malam said: "Approximately 4,000 bulbs are being set aside for the Friends to plant. There's no rush to plant them all on Thursday. It would be good to continue planting the bulbs during a weekend session, which would give people who can't attend during the week the chance to be involved."

Altogether more than 100,000 bulbs will be planted including 15,000 winter aconite, 50,000 snowdrop, 15,000 bluebell, 15,000 tete-a-tete daffodil and 10,000 wild daffoldil.

That's in addition to around 60,000 bulbs planted earlier this year.

John added: "The bulbs are being planted in drifts, and will be allowed to naturalise. Don't panic if this is new to you. No experience is necessary, we have a wonderful opportunity to be guided by a professional garden designer."

Volunteers are asked to bring hand trowels, hand forks , buckets and sacks for weeds and wear gardening gloves and suitable footwear.

At the end of the session the group plans to walk over to the Novel Bite café in the library which offers refreshments, snacks and light lunches.

It is run by students from Warrington and Vale Royal College who are gaining valuable employability and life skills through running their very own café in Winsford.

The Thursday morning drop in cafe at St Andrew's Church is not being held on Thursday as there is a funeral.

Anyone travelling by car is advised to park in the town and walk across to the park as the car park at the back of St Andrew's is for church users only.
