HUNDREDS of people paid tribute to Winsford war heroes at the town's annual remembrance Sunday parade and service.

A record crowd joined veterans and civic dignitaries to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Rain failed to dampen spirits as the parade led by the Salvation Army band marched into the town centre.

Town mayor Cllr Gina Lewis said: “The parade and service grows larger with each year that passes and it is wonderful that so many people can spare the time to remember those who gave their lives. This year was very special, however, in that it marked 100 years since the end of the First World War.”

Rev Tim Hanson, chaplain to town mayor Cllr Gina Lewis, conducted the service.

Deputy Lord Lieutenant Susan Proctor laid a wreath on behalf of the Queen.

Town Mayor Councillor Gina Lewis and her consort Denis Lewis laid a wreath in memory of all the Winsford men and women who sacrificed their lives for their country.

Town clerk Mark Bailey laid a wreath at the town’s Boer War memorial.

Junior mayor Mya Barlow and Salt Queen Brogan Bowyeris also laid wreaths on behalf of the Town Council.

Various organisations including local regiments, schools, clubs and societies laid wreaths at the town’s war memorials in memory of the 247 Winsford men who lost their lives in the First World War and subsequent conflicts.

Ollie Bancroft and the Vocel choir provided additional music.

Cllr Lewis added: “The themes for my mayoral year are peace and hope. I think that this year’s remembrance service reflected both these themes – giving our thanks to those who died to ensure peace finally came 100 years ago and hope for our own futures in a world which is ever-changing.

“I was so proud as I took the march past salute following the service alongside Deputy Lord Lieutenant Mrs Proctor and my consort. I was proud to see so many organisations taking part – more than ever before. Winsford had done itself proud.”

The commemoration was organised jointly by Winsford Town Council and the Winsford branch of the Royal British Legion.

A beacon was lit on Rilshaw Meadows on Sunday evening as part of the international Battle’s Over – Beacons of Light initiative.
