EVER speed up to make it through a traffic light before it turns red?

New digital speed cameras are popping up on roads across Cheshire – and some are able to clock drivers’ speeds as they pass traffic lights.

As part of a county-wide roll-out programme, 14 digital speed cameras have been installed to date in Cheshire West – including five attached to traffic lights.

“Road safety is a priority for the council,” said Cllr Karen Shore, cabinet member for environment at Cheshire West and Chester Council.

“We want drivers to know where the cameras are located so they can adjust their driving accordingly and help reduce crashes and reduce any risk to drivers and pedestrians.”

Traditional speed cameras relied on film, meaning they would be rendered useless once the film had run out until it was replaced.

The new red light cameras are able to spot drivers who drive through a red light, as well as clock speeding motorists who rush to avoid waiting.

Cllr Shore added: “These cameras can detect vehicles that run a red light or exceed the speed limit at any time, whether the traffic light is red, amber or green.”

CWAC is part of the Cheshire Road Safety Group – alongside Halton, Warrington and Cheshire East councils, plus Cheshire Police.

Since 2014, the group has funded the digital upgrade of speed cameras across all four boroughs – with each camera costing £35,000 plus installation and maintenance of the camera pole and housing unit.
