INQUISITIVE children celebrated the birthday of eminent scientist Marie Curie by exploring her fascinating career.

Every pupil at the Grange Community Primary School on Brindley Avenue in Winsford took part in World Science Day.

Pioneering Marie Curie discovered radium and polonium and won the Nobel Peace Prize twice.

In 1903, she was awarded for her breakthroughs in physics with her husband Pierre and she was honoured again in 1911 in chemistry for creating a means of measuring radioactivity.

Their research was crucial in the development of x-rays in surgery. During the First World War, Marie Curie helped to equip ambulances with x-ray equipment, which she herself drove to the front lines.

Each class at The Grange examined x-rays, completed biographies and even created their own investigations.

Children investigated careers in radiography and various other opportunities presented by science.

Executive head teacher Annette Williams said: "This is yet another example of the amazing work our staff are doing to provide an exciting curriculum, with opportunities for our pupils to think about the careers they will aim for in the future."
