MATTHEW Woolley’s late penalty ended Chadderton’s resistance and sent 1874 Northwich through to the next stage of the Macron Cup.

He sent goalkeeper Jordan Hadlow the wrong way with a spot-kick awarded by referee Matthew Scholes after Taylor Kennerley was hauled down by Devon Matthews.

It put a team managed by Paul Bowyer and Wayne Goodison in front for a third time, and they protected that advantage for the remainder.

Chadderton, out of sorts after losing four of their previous five matches, took the lead on nine minutes when James Dwyer’s strike from distance looped over Northwich custodian James Coates after taking a decisive deflection.

1874 restored parity shortly afterwards when Sam Hare, making his first start since returning to the club following a spell living in Australia, finished neatly from full-back Jordan Tucker’s cross.

Scott McGowan then made it 2-1 when he stroked in a penalty on 34 minutes after he had ben tripped by Kyle McGovern when attempting to reach Joe Woolley’s pass.

Chadderton ought to have levelled when Harry Pratt sliced wide of an open goal.

Instead they did so in more spectacular fashion when Jordan Butterworth’s stunning strike swerved beyond Coates.

McGowan was thwarted by Hadlow’s smart save after running clear and the home team’s number one also denied Kazim Waite-Jackson in the moments after half-time.

The midfielder wasn’t to be denied, and drilling in the visitors’ third goal following fine approach play by Joe Woolley.

Chadderton responded immediately and Will Shawcross took a touch to steady himself before firing in another equaliser for the hosts.

Mark Jones had an effort ruled out for offside before Matthew Woolley’s shot from the edge of the penalty area flashed wide.

Waite-Jackson sent an attempt against the base of an upright from an angle before the tie’s deciding moment followed with time running out.
