A DOG died and its owner was left with head injuries following an unprovoked attack while walking past a fight in Birkenhead.

The little Yorkshire Terrier was hit on the head with an unknown object and its owner was also hit on the head after they walked past a fight in Corporation Road on Friday night.

The owner refused medical assistance.

Chief Inspector George Phillips said: "This was an unprovoked and unfortunate attack on a man who was not involved in the altercation and was simply taking his dog for a walk.

"The dog unfortunately died at the scene and we are investigating the incident.

"The man walking his dog did not see the attackers and promptly left the scene.

"There were a number of people on Corporation Road that night and we would urge those people to come forward to help us with any information in relation to the incident."
