STORMY weekend weather could not stop 40 hardworking boys and girls from Goostrey Cubs and Brownies from planting a new woodland bank at Swanwick Hall in Goostrey.

The creation of a new woodland bank - a ‘bongs’ in old Cheshire dialect - was a joint initiative of Goostrey Cubs and Goostrey Brownies, and the children have promised to keep their trees free of weeds and well-watered if we have another long hot summer next year.

Cub Leader Paul Kemsley said: “By planting lots of trees and bulbs along the banks of the Shear Brook the children are providing homes for local wildlife, and it has been a fantastic opportunity for our boys and girls to enhance their environment

“We are very grateful to Claire Gilchrist-Dick of the Swanwick Hall Estate, who allowed us to do the planting on their land, and for providing all the bulbs, to Aiden Hewitt, the estate manager, for his time helping to mark out the areas for planting, as well as to Goostrey Rose Festival for supplying the saplings.

Sarah Russell, Brownie Leader, said: “I was delighted to see what a great team effort the planting proved, and all the children were a real credit to our community.

“I am sure that the flowers will look fabulous next spring, and we can look forward to watching all the trees grow over the years to come.”

1st Goostrey Scouts is led by Group Scout Leader Neil Memmott and is open to local boys and girls aged six to 14.
