ADVICE on how to become more skilled in using the internet is being offered at a special series of events during Get Online Week from October 15 to 19.

Free weekly sessions on computing for beginners start at Wyvern House on The Drumber on Monday from 10am to 12 noon.

Cllr Brian Clarke, cabinet member for economic development and infrastructure, said: “In the 21st Century having the skills to carry out your private business or professional business online will make life run more smoothly.

“Our council buildings have the technology to allow residents to go online and carry out important tasks such as applying for Universal Credit or accessing Council services.

“People who don’t feel confident using the internet will really benefit from the events we are running during Get Online Week.”

A special digital market street about the benefits of using the internet will be held on Wednesday, October 17 from 10.30am to 12.30pm at Wyvern House.

People will receive practical advice on how to do online shopping, find out about local health and wellbeing services, manage their Universal Credit account and how to find a job vacancy online.

Events aimed at small businesses take place on Friday, October 19.

Businesses are invited to attend Boost Your Business workshops to learn how to promote their companies using the internet and social media.

An Introduction to Digital Advertising workshop starts at 10am. Businesses can learn how to attract new customers by maximizing their presence on Google and how to get started with online advertising.

A Writing for Social Media workshop at 11.15am will introduce businesses to the secrets of writing social media posts which successfully promote their products.

A Social Media Strategy workshop will explain how to engage an audience or attract customers online using social media at 12.30pm.

Get Online Week started in 2007 and has reached more than 500,000 people, helping them take their first steps to do more online.

Last year Get Online Week hosted 4,000 events across the UK and is the largest digital inclusion campaign in the world.
