A BID to build a 66-bed care home as part of Moston’s regeneration has been approved despite a call for more parking spaces.

LNT Care Developments will build the care home as part of the wider plans for the former Albion Chemicals site in Booth Lane – which will also include 100 homes, a pub and commercial units.

The care home will be built with 25 parking spaces – but this is less than the 37 that are usually expected by Cheshire East Council.

Asked by Cllr Toni Fox, independent, why more parking spaces would not be provided, Tracey Spencer from LNT said: “To be perfectly honest with you, 37 is quite excessive – CEC has got quite a high standard.

“We normally only provide 18 parking spaces, and from experience of the homes that we operate, that is adequate.

“We are quite happy with the provision, there are only 15 members of staff on site at any one time. The rest will be visitors’ spaces.”

But Cllr Fox, CEC member for Wilmslow Dean Row, insisted that based on her personal experience, LNT’s plan for parking would not be sufficient.

She said: “I’ve had various elderly relatives who have been in various different care homes, and without fail every single one of them has not had sufficient parking – without fail.

“When I previously sat on the northern planning committee we had an application that came to us where we actually lost some public open space for car parking for a care home, because enough hadn’t been provided in the first place.

“Given its location, a lot of people are going to be driving to visit their relatives in this care home. Fifteen staff places are going to be absolutely minimal, and that does not take into account crossover.

“I don’t think our parking standards are overgenerous. I think they are below standard, and it really worries me that we are happy to let developers get away with less parking spaces than our own standards would require.”

Plans for the care home were approved by nine votes to two.
