FRIENDS of Town Park can now begin to operate as a community group.

Volunteers formed a committee and adopted a constitution at a public meeting on Thursday.

Suggestions were made about various activities the group could become involved with.

Newly elected chairman John Malam said: “There were some excellent ideas ranging from the making and siting of bat and bird boxes, a tree trail, forming links with local schools, taking part in the Great British Spring Clean 2019 event, the planting of specimen trees and the creation of a calendar.”

Joint funding has been approved by CWAC and Winsford town council for the park’s horticulturalist Jo Fawcett to work with the group.

Six benches will be installed shortly.

Work to complete the landscaping at the main entrance and a viewing platform starts this week as part of a £900,000 refurbishment.

This will involve topsoiling the mounded area where the cabins were, turfing or grass seeding the banks and planting the top tier beside the railings with ground cover planting.

The work will also include two feature trees.

Lighting for eight salt stack sculptures should be completed in the next two to three weeks. Concrete plinths will be fitted with uplighters.

The friends have been invited to help plant spring bulbs over the autumn.
