A PROJECT to mark Alzheimer’s awareness month has seen residents at a Crewe care home recall some of their favourite memories by creating a memory tree.

Residents at The Elms have taken part in the reminiscence therapy to improve their memory, cognitive abilities and overall wellbeing.

Creating the memory tree involved residents writing down favourite memories on differently shaped, multicoloured pieces of paper and hanging them by ribbons from a decorated tree branch in the care home’s lounge.

Julie Parkinson, activities coordinator at The Elms, said: “We wanted to do something to encourage residents to share their memories for Alzheimer’s awareness month.

"Creating the memory tree proved really good fun. Hearing some of the memories gave me a fascinating insight into some our residents’ lives.

"There was a lot of laughter too, as people recalled some of their funnier memories.”

Memories that were written down included Phyllis Hankey’s, 93, who remembered meeting her husband for the very first time at The Crewe Works, a factory in Crewe that once made engines for trains.

George Price, 87, wrote about how proud he felt when he walked out onto the pitch at Gretsy Road to play for Crewe Alexandra Football Club as a professional football player.

Betty Alice, 82, recalled memories of going to the beach whilst on holidays in the south of England with her husband, George.
