A HUSBAND and wife have become ‘plagued’ by lorries getting stuck under the Nantwich Road aqueduct.

Mike and Samantha Richards, who live in Nantwich Road, Middlewich, have been left frustrated at the number of HGV drivers who use their driveway as a turning circle because they are unaware of the A530 low bridge.

The couple claim signs aren’t clear enough for drivers coming from Crewe and estimate that an incident occurs approximately every three weeks.

Mike says four instances in the past 12 months have resulted in the road becoming completely blocked.

He said: “We sometimes wonder why we moved here at all.

“The worst we’ve seen it is when an ambulance was unable to get through because the road was blocked.

“We were aware of the problem before we moved in 15 months ago but now substantial damage is being caused to our property.

“It’s become extremely frustrating not just for us but for the drivers as well as they keep telling me that the signage isn’t clear enough.

“We’ve asked for the signs to be increased for traffic approaching from the Crewe side as we feel this would allow drivers to see the low bridge clearly.

“The only option we’ve got at the moment is to narrow the frontage to our house which is going to come at a significant cost. It’s not ideal.

“If the signs are improved then it would give us longer to look at the situation.”

Mike estimates the cost of narrowing the front of the driveway will be around £30,000.

The couple also plan to gate the driveway to stop residents from using it as a thoroughfare into Middlewich or on to the canal.
