Singer Robbie Williams has described politics as a “pantomime”, but said he is preparing to vote for the first time.

The former X Factor judge told the PA news agency he would vote in the election on December 12, but had not been engaging with the campaigns.

He said: “It’s confusing, it’s a mess, nobody’s trustworthy.

“I don’t trust the system, I never have.

“It’s just never taken my interest. It’s like saying ‘is that why you’ve never ballroom danced before?’ I’m just not interested.

“They don’t talk for me, they don’t talk to me, they don’t appeal to me, they never have.

“It’s just a pantomime that exists in a different stratosphere to the one I’m in.”

Representatives for the singer, who was speaking at Port Vale Football Club stadium in his native Stoke-on-Trent,  stopped him from continuing to explain his reasons for voting.

Williams returned to his hometown on Tuesday to promote a concert which will be held at the Vale Park Stadium on June 20 next year in aid of charities Donna Louise Hospice for Children and Young People, Unicef UK and The Hubb Foundation.
