SELF-MADE band The Slow Readers Club are to play at Parr Hall on their next tour.

The Manchester four-piece will be back in Warrington on April 9 after performing at Victoria Park's Neighbourhood Weekender last year.

After building a huge army of fans on a grassroots level, without record label support and limited media exposure, The Slow Readers Club jumped into the mainstream when their album, Build A Tower, went into the top 20 on the album chart in 2018.

No stranger to Warrington, the indie band once shared a stage with Catfish and the Bottlemen at Friars Court in their early days.

At that time they used the likes of TuneCore and Disc Wizards to self-release their music and with a little help from indie promoter Scruff of the Neck for their live shows, they went from tiny venues to some of the biggest stages and festivals.

The announcement coincides with news of the band’s fourth album, The Joy of The Return, which is due to be released in March.

It was recorded at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool and produced by long-standing collaborator Phil Bulleyment.

Singer Aaron Starkie said: “I think it’s definitely our most interesting and accomplished record musically.

“Lyrically the album covers love, alienation, the rise of right-wing populism and comments on algorithm-driven propaganda.

“And as always, I try to deliver those lyrics with uplifting melody.”

The announcement of the album and tour comes on the back of another huge year for the band, which saw them play a mammoth, 32-date European tour and a number of sold-out UK shows.
