THE world’s oldest working narrow gauge steam engine will make a special appearance alongside brand new locos at Direct Rail Services’ charity open day Crewe.

The Ffestiniog Railway’s steam engine, Prince, will attend the event at the Gresty Bridge Depot on July 19 during a showcase one of DRS’ new Class 68 locomotives.

Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the drivers and have their photo taken standing on the footplate of Prince.

Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways chief engineer, Jon Whalley, was brought up in Crewe.

He said “working with locomotives is a little boys’ dream and I have been very lucky to do so.

“For me, another dream is coming true, having the opportunity to take Prince, the oldest narrow gauge steam locomotive in the world, back to my home town.”
