Olympic tales

WITH the Olympics almost upon us, I thought I would like to share my memories of the 1948 Olympics with Guardian readers.

In 1948 I was 11 years old and still at Davenham School.

Every Friday all the children from around the Northwich area were taken by bus to the Plaza, which in those days was a cinema, to watch the Olympics on the screen.

When it was over we were taken by bus back to Davenham. On the Monday morning at school we had to write about what we had seen the previous Friday.

I was only 3 in 1948 and don't remember those games and to be honest I am not particularly bothered about these new games. However I have to say that the opening ceremony, after a very inauspicious start turned out to be FANTASTIC and the lighting of the flame was the best I have EVER seen.
I have only one question, why is it basically ALL in London? Why did they not spread it all over the country? Athletics in London, Swimming in Birmingham, Cycling in Manchester, Rowing in Wales, Equestrian in Scotland etc etc. As it is for anyone outside London the games might as well be in Timbuktu as all we do is watch on TV.

I have to say I was wrong about the Olympics, they have been magnificent. I just wish I didn't see empty seats that corporate bodies have not taken up, what a waste.
