Amazed at conclusions reached with a lack of knowledge

I NEVER cease to be amazed at the conclusions people make based on lack of real knowledge and scientific fact.

This statement refers to the letters in the Guardian of November 18, on which I comment as follows: The ‘not in my backyard’ brigade are the local people who will be faced with the prospect of up to 750 HGVs travelling to and from the Lostock site if the Brunner Mond Incinerator is built.

This traffic is, of course, the cumulative sum of three plants: Bedminster already sanctioned, Viridor and Brunner Mond planned or at the tender stage.

Why should local people put up with this shambles and gross inconvenience?

Burning waste (incineration) is about as inefficient as one can get in the production of steam/electricity/hot water.

If we wish to produce energy in this way, and I agree it makes sense, why not use a more efficient process than incineration? They do exist and they are tried and tested.

Money and government would like to decide plans for the Lostock site, but never underestimate the power of people in this equation.

If the majority of people living locally, the parish councils and council combine to put in a strong protest vote, central government should listen.

There is precedent for this and people should not be so gullible that they believe the outcome has already been decided.

Do not be fooled that Brunner Mond would continue manufacturing the two products involved for many years.

They will close these plants when it suits them, once they have this incinerator in place, to sell electricity to the national grid.

Do we really want to become the waste dumping ground for the north of England?

We will if the planned incinerators at Middlewich and Northwich go ahead. They will not be burning Cheshire’s waste – they are not part of Cheshire’s Waste Plan. The Northwich Vision? I don’t think so if this happens.
