Although the shooting stopped on November 11, 1918 British Armed Forces including men from Winsford carried on fighting in Russia assisting the White Russians against the Red Russians until 1920 after the revolution there.
The Soldiers and Sailors Society founded in 1885 has had a continued presence assisting bereaved families and returned veterans in Winsford. During the Great War we were the official provider of assistance.
The person who ran our organisation in Winsford was the town clerk John Henry Cooke. He helped my relatives – I lost an uncle and two great uncles in that conflict.
I think that SSAFA should have more recognition for all the welfare work undertaken since its inception and is still working in the town.
No doubt The Royal British Legion will benefit most from this poignant anniversary but people should know that SSAFA was first in the field helping service people and their dependants.
