HAVE just read the article £10k ‘fairness’ scheme is unfair in the Northwich Guardian.

As a 67 year old pensioner born in 1951 I have to strongly disagree with some of the ‘facts’.

His paragraph on ‘so the story goes’ seems to very aptly describe many pensioners lives.

Percentages here may be useful.

I didn’t notice the banking crisis of 2004, I thought it was 2008!

We bought a house in 1973 with a five per cent deposit, not 20 per cent, another sweeping generalisation from the article.

We could also afford a house on the low 1970s teacher’s pay.

Yes the mortgage rate went up to 16 per cent but there is no indication in the article for how long.

Yes inflation may have reached 25 per cent, but again for how long?

Not all women born in the 1950s were affected by the rise in the pension age.

The Fly in the Ointment really needs to check the facts and figures and not make such sweeping statements.

Yes, I lived through poor teacher’s pay, high prices for children’s clothes, inflation, high mortgage rates and several recessions, including the loss of our insurance that was going to pay off our mortgage.

But despite all that we are now pensioners living the life described in the article.

Pensioners are treated financially favourably by this government compared to other sections of society.

Though I am aware that there are pensioners who are some of the poorest in our society, many of us could afford to pay more tax to help the NHS.

Please before writing such a misleading article, next time check your facts and use less sweeping generalisations.
