I TOTALLY agree with last week’s letter by Mike Yeats. Some sentences are not worth giving to the criminal and do not deter people.
A lot of sentences are a farce as the guilty are given say 10 years and released after serving less than half.
These low sentences are an insult to the victim and to the honest public.
If 10 years are given they should be served. If convicts are troublesome in prison their stay should be increased. No reduction for good behaviour.
Personally I feel our police must feel aggrieved at the cost in man hours, with out of touch judges giving low sentences.
I also feel that those that have swindled and made money unlawfully, should be fined and be made to pay it back.
Low sentences mean they will return – a slap on the hand means nothing to criminals.
