I ATTENDED the Christmas lights switch-on in Wilmslow on November 25, witnessing the joyful faces of the children enjoying the reindeer, a well-organised event for which Matthew Jackson, the town clerk, should be congratulated.
As it took place in Romany’s memorial Gardens I reflected on how the Reverend Bramwell Even, Romany, a Methodist minister and famous naturalist would have viewed his garden used for such an event.
As his fame was gained broadcasting his nature walks on the BBC Children’s Hour in the 1930/40’s, I’m sure he would have approved as the children were experiencing a Christmas event with live animals (reindeer).
How appropriate that the parade should pass through the garden on ‘Romany’s Walk’, the path so named after his ‘Out with Romany’ country walks broadcast on the wireless.
On a warm summer’s evening I saw a group of Girl Guides having a meeting on the grass, under the trees in the glow of the setting sun.
Again I am sure Romany would have been delighted at the pleasant scene, as he had been Scout Master in Carlisle and later had two troops at another church. Well done Matthew.
