WINSFORD United extended a winning sequence to three matches for the first time this season after coming from behind to beat Squires Gate on Tuesday.

It propels Blues into the Premier Division table’s top 10.

Captain Kyle Riley’s double, his first league goals since mid-October, and a stunning strike from Scott Taylor settled the outcome the visitors’ way.

They even survived the dismissal of defender David Davies as a punishment for receiving two yellow cards.

Winsford started brightly, going closest when Sam Howell’s attempt whistled over after Ryan Mellor’s cut back-heel had conjured an opening.

However they fell behind midway through the first half when former Witton Albion front man Mark Buchan sent a superb volley flashing past goalkeeper Dale Latham after a quickly-taken throw-in.

Midfielder Elliot Hull was then denied when Gate custodian Nathan Thompson pushed his swerving strike from distance onto the crossbar.

Blues did get the leveller their display deserved on 34 minutes, when Taylor fired with power into the far corner from an angle.

Joseph Noblet should have done better early in the second period, but shot weakly at Latham.

Winsford took the lead shortly before the hour when Riley’s attempt, from Howell’s assist, squirmed past Thompson.

Latham denied Nathan Trout with a smart save at the foot of an upright, then Davies was sent off with 25 minutes still to play.

The home team, beaten only once in their past seven matches, pushed for an equaliser.

Joshua Westwood headed straight at Winsford’s custodian, then Sam Parr timed an intervention to thwart Buchan.

Blues did not lose their sense of adventure though, and Riley was unlucky to see a defender block his goal-bound effort while Taylor sent a shot narrowly wide.

Maximum points were scored with three minutes remaining after player-manager Lee Duckworth, Howell and Mellor combined on the left to create an opening for Riley.

His finish was emphatic.
