Medals galore for Cambridge

MORE than 50 Cambridge Harriers members entered the annual county track championships at Ashford in the heat last weekend and between them they came away with a record 35 medals.

Best performance of the weekend was from Woolwich Poly schoolboy David Bolarinwa, who smashed not only the club record for 100m he set the week before, but also the championship best performance.

His time of 11.22s now ranks him number one in the UK for his age group and marks him down as one of the favourites for the national championship to be held later in the season.

Bolarinwa wasn't the only club member to shine as the medal count grew over the weekend.

Curtis Griffiths-Parker, now throwing as an under-20, took both the shot and discus titles with throws of 17.32m and 53.11m respectively, while Kate Laidlow also enjoyed a double by winning both the under-20 women's 200m and 400m.

Sixteen-year-old Craig Lacy got close again to the 50m mark in the javelin, taking gold with a throw of 49.60m in the under-20 age group.

At the other end of the spectrum, 48-year-old Andy Kruszewkski took his eighth senior men's discus competition with a throw of 43.89m in the final round.

Craig Lacy wasn't the only javelin star to shine with Sally Duggan taking the under-15 girls' title with a throw of 34.59m.

Dean Lacy, the club's prodigious middle and long distance star, added to the 5,000m title he won at Tonbridge on Monday night with a runaway win in the 1,500m with a time of 3m54.88s.

Another key member of the club's senior men's team, Francois Potgeiter, took the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.73s.

Not to be outshone by the men, the senior women also took two titles.

Xanine Powell stormed away from the filed to win the 100m in 12.18s and Clare Elms won the 5,000m on Monday night.

Other members to medal at the championship were: Tolu Odusanya 100m (silver) and 200m (bronze); Donomar Smith 800m (bronze); Jon Hart 1,500m walk (silver); Fewa Williams 400m hurdles (bronze); Ashley George high jump (bronze); Stefan Mitchell 100m (silver) and 200m (bronze); Lee Coogan 800m (silver); Sam Murphy 800m (bronze); Prince Enzinwa triple jump (silver); Tony Tipping shot putt (bronze); Emily Nolan 800m (bronze); Anesa Wonogho shot putt (bronze); Jess Clarke 80m hurdles (silver) and 300m hurdles (silver); Gabriella Ade Onojobi 80m hurdles (bronze); Claire Elms 800m (bronze) and Helen Daniel discus (silver).
