WHITE Oak Triathlon club's fast and furious duathlon was declared a whiteout following heavy snow last Sunday.
Ninety hardened athletes assembled at Anthony Roper School in Eynsford early in the morning expecting to compete in the biannual event, which features a 5km run, 22km bike ride and 5km run through the Darenth valley.
Instead, the athletes were greeted with the news the bike leg of the race was cancelled due to dangerous road conditions and the event would likely be replaced with a 10km road run.
However, as snow continued to fall and conditions worsened, eventually the race organiser was forced to cancel the event to prevent the risk of injury in the slippery conditions.
John Setford, who was due to run, said: "While it is disappointing for all concerned, there was no way any form of racing could be considered in such conditions."
Competitors who registered on the morning of the race are eligible for free entry into October's event, or a refund.
