Winsford men shine on the national stage
5:22pm Thursday 31st May 2012 in Sport
WINSFORD bowlers played a pivotal part as the Mid-Cheshire Bowling Association’s representative team continued the defence of its Federation National League title with a win.
Mid Cheshire A were convincing winners against South Derbyshire in Division One on Sunday, with four of five Wharton Cons regulars winning their head-to-head in the home leg at Hazel Pear.
Mark Vernon and Alan Vickers did the same on the road.
“It puts us in a good position,” said team manager Alan Jackson afterwards.
“The important thing now is to keep the momentum going.”
Simon Cookson, Steve Curbishley, Jimmy Harrop, Thomas Vickers and Shaun Yearsley were on duty in the match at Northwich.
Winsford venue Wharton Cons played host for Mid Cheshire B’s season opener against Leeds in Division Three, which they lost 19-13.
Lester Bebbington was a winner on his home green, but Winsford Cons pair Terry Bebbington and Tony Chesters was single-figure losers at the Tin Mission.
Dave Hamlett senior (Wharton Cons) was the solitary Winsford-based winner in the away leg at Tadcaster.
Mid Cheshire B will want to bounce back quickly if they are to avoid a repeat of last summer’s relegation from the competition’s third tier.
They were reprieved following a reshuffle.
Wharton Cons supply seven starters for Cheshire’s Endsleigh Senior County Championship clash with Wales, again at Hazel Pear, this Sunday. Play starts at 2pm.
Glynn Cookson is named as skipper, while Graham Donnelly and Danny Nixon join Simon Cookson, Curbishley, Thomas Vickers and Yearsley in the team.
The county side were winners in their Section Two opener against Potteries & District last month.
