Blues go goals crazy to finish term in style

Bacup Borough 3 Winsford United 6 WINSFORD scored six times at the weekend to sign off for the season in style.

Only top two Ramsbottom and Runcorn Town hit the net more times than Ian Street’s men, who finish seventh, in the Premier Division this term.

Saturday’s success is a fifth in the final seven matches.

Top scorer Matthew Ward opened the scoring on five minutes after a mazy dribble, Jamie Henders doubling the visitors’ tally soon afterwards from Sam McKay’s centre.

They survived a scare when goalkeeper Andrew Jones tipped Jamil Adam’s shot onto a post, only for Henders to set up Rick Bailey for Blues’ third goal at the start of the second half.

Jones missed a clearance to allow Porya Ahmadi to reduce Bacup’s arrears, before Lee Duckworth burst through to restore Winsford’s three-goals advantage.

Daniel Cocks pulled back a goal as Bacup, crowned League Challenge Cup winners in midweek, rallied before Martin Cosgrove punished another mistake by the custodian to make it 4-3.

Winsford finished in style though, Ward’s effort parried into Henders’ path for Blues’ fifth goal before substitute Mike Gunn headed a sixth from Daley Woods’ corner in stoppage time.

Meanwhile Henders, Woods and Bailey scored Winsford’s goals as they signed off at home with a 3-1 victory against Maine Road last Tuesday.

Winsford Andrew Jones (GK), Sam McKay, Bockarie, Thomas (Gunn 66), Duckworth, Vickers, Bailey, Woods, Ward, Rudd, Henders. Sub not used Bircumshaw. Att 55.
