Winsford United will wait to decide on their starting line up

MIKE Alcock says Winsford United’s starting line up for their season opener on Saturday week is far from sorted.

Blues’ assistant manager will make up his mind who will face Colne with number one Terry Murphy only after his team’s remaining friendlies.

“There are probably four or five positions where we know who is going to play there,” he said.

“The rest are up for grabs.”

Winsford kicked off their pre-season preparations with a 4-0 win over Cheshire Leaguers Whitchurch Alport on Tuesday.

Dave Tasker helped himself to a hat-trick, while Mike Brandon added the other goal.

Blues followed that with a goalless draw against Crewe FC 48 hours later.

“We were given two tough tests,” said Alcock.

“Both opponents were fair teams, although we were unlucky not to make a breakthrough in the second match.”

So impressed was he with Crewe schemer Jon Dawson that he handed the former Kidsgrove Athletic man a trial in Tuesday's friendly against Welsh Alliance outfit Llangollen Town.

Alcock has been further boosted by news that wide man Steve Warburton will link up with Winsford in the middle of next month – six weeks earlier than expected.

“It’s a huge filip,” he said.

“He’s a player we know well and I believe he will do a good job at this level.”

Winsford complete their pre-season preparations with a trip to Connahs Quay Nomads on Saturday, kick off 2pm.

Neighbours Tarporley Victoria visit Barton Stadium next Tuesday, August 4, kick off 7.30pm.
