Winsford United look to sign mid-Cheshire's best footballers

WINSFORD United reckons Terry Murphy’s reputation will help him recruit the best amateur footballers in mid Cheshire.

Blues new boss told the Guardian he intended to bring in the star turns from former club Middlewich Town as he builds a team for next term.

“They’re good enough, no doubt about that,” he said.

“One or two have been on the phone already asking if they can come here because it’s always been their ambition to test themselves at a higher level.

“We also lost about half a dozen during the course of last season that joined clubs like Congleton and Alsager and they’ve gone on to do reasonably well.”

Murphy’s blend will be one of know-how and athleticism.

And he has already held talks with the manager of a team that reached the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup last term with a view to blooding their best players at senior level.

“Terry is looking to bring in the best of the players from mid Cheshire the team will be a mixture of youth and experience,” said Blues secretary Bob Astles.

"The emphasis will be on fitness and training and we’re excited about our prospects for next season.”

Murphy plans to start pre-season training at the end of June to give his new-look team time enough to learn how to play together.

By then he hopes to have signed individuals that will figure in key positions on the pitch.

“My work starts this week,” he said.

“I want to be making signings as soon as possible so we know where we stand heading into next season.

“It’s going to be busy, but I’m ready.”
