Winsford United appoint former Middlewich Town manager

TERRY Murphy is the new Winsford United manager.

Blues believe his knowledge of the mid Cheshire football, not to mention his unrivalled trophy haul, made him the obvious choice to succeed Joe Gibiliru.

“We’re excited about Terry’s arrival,” said secretary Bob Astles.

“He has promised to bring in the best of the local players and the team will be a blend of youth and experience.

“We are optimistic the club can begin the climb back to where we really belong.”

Murphy, who has never hid his desire to manage at North West Counties League level, will be assisted by Mike Alcock.

Together the duo guided Middlewich Town to three Cheshire League titles, including an unprecedented treble in 2007, during a glittering seven-year spell.

The Witches did not finish outside the top two with Murphy at the helm.

Now Winsford hope some of that success transfers to Barton Stadium, along with the start turns from Town’s title-winning team.

Most of Gibiliru’s side, brought in from Merseyside, are likely to leave.

“Terry will be starting from scratch,” said chairman Mark Loveless.

“That won’t be easy and the supporters will have to be patient, particularly as he will be working with a very small budget by our standards.”
