IZZY Kay won a gold medal as Winsford Swim Team celebrated their best Swim England National Summer Meet to date.

She was the pick of the field in a thrilling under 14s girls' 200m butterfly final, edging out a rival from City of Birmingham in a lifetime best of 2:24.02.

"It was the race of her life," reflected head coach Dan Goodwin.

"She went into the final ranked sixth but determined to win - and did!"

Winsford swimmers won four other medals during five days of competition at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

Two of those were earned in the same race after Ethan Wright pipped Finn Armitt to silver in the under 16s boys' 200m butterfly final.

Goodwin said: "We expected it to be close, and it was.

"Both of them raced their heart out, and it was great to see two of our swimmers battling to get onto the podium."

Wright had collected a first medal on the national stage earlier in the week after improving on his personal best by close to 30 seconds to classify third in the 1,500m freestyle for his age-group.

Meanwhile Jay Cushen, who had made the cut to contest five individual disciplines at the British Summer Championships the previous week, followed an impressive showing there by taking bronze in the under 15s boys' 800m.

His time, 8:48.73, was little more than half a second adrift of winner Thomas Trebilcock and a 12-second improvement on his previous best.

Winsford were represented too by Will Murray - who narrowly missed out on a medal in the under 17s boys' 50m breaststroke - Ethan Jones, Alissa Blackshaw and newcomer Marcus Cook.

Meanwhile Henry Oliver concluded his summer campaign by collecting three medals - one of each colour - at the Swim Wales Summer Open at Swansea.

He was a convincing victor in the under 16s boys' 1,500m freestyle, improving on a personal best set two years earlier.

The Winsford Swim Team member had claimed silver for the same stroke over 800m just 48 hours earlier, this time shaving six seconds of a previous lifetime best.

And he completed the set with third position in the 400m freestyle.

Adam Blackshaw was sixth in the over 17s boys' 200m butterfly final, while Lottie Howman contested the preliminaries for both the under 14s girls' 100m butterfly and 400m freestyle.

She later improved her personal best for the 50m breaststroke and 200m individual medley.

Winsford's contingent also included Theo Oliver, who classified sixth in the under 13s boys' 1,500m freestyle.
