WINSFORD duo Glynn Cookson and Tom Vickers reached the last four on finals night for the Castle Classic last weekend.

However it was there that the duo’s progress was halted.

Cookson, a victor in 2016, squeezed past Sam Patterson (21-20) in his opening game - recovering from 13-20 down – before brushing aside Chris Bly (21-11).

Ryan Clark, from Thongsbridge, ended the Wharton Cons member’s run at the semi-finals stage.

Vickers was handed a bye to the last eight after Wirral bowler Julie Gardner, his scheduled opponent, withdrew through illness.

He recorded a notable 21-11 victory against Greg Smith, a former British Senior Individual Merit winner, when he did take to the green.

But Ashleigh Woof (Preston) put paid to the Wharton Cons man’s hopes with a 21-11 victory in their semi-finals encounter.

Clark, who eliminated Cheshire Senior Merit winner Tommy Johnstone at the ‘All England’ championships last month, then claimed the £1,000 first prize following a 21-19 triumph in the final.

Meanwhile Woof took home £475 for making it that far.

A third local favourite, Martin Gerrard from Northwich, went down 21-11 against Sheffield-based Dean Missere in the last 16.

Organiser Adi Faulkner thanked every bowler that supported the competition, which will return for a fifth edition during the 2019 season.
