WINSFORD Saxons have completed a Crewe and District League double for a second successive season.

They prevailed after a penalty shoot-out in the AJ Cooke Cup final on Saturday against Winnington Avenue 1994, opponents they defeated in last year’s edition.

A side managed by Chris Thomas and Peter Hughes had already secured top spot in the league a fortnight earlier.

However they were made to work for their latest success, coming from behind twice to draw level at Sandbach United’s home on Hind Heath Road.

The Northwich outfit had a goal ruled out for offside before leading scorer Buba Drammeh put them ahead after latching on to a through-ball – his 19th of the campaign.

Saxons replied when Terry Cain found the net, but they fell behind a second time shortly afterwards.

It was left to substitute Liam Kettle to make it 2-2, forcing extra time.

Winnington had a player sent off, but resisted pressure from their opponents before missing out narrowly 3-2 on spot kicks.

It increases to five the number of trophies won by Winsford since they joined the competition at the start of last season.

The won the league and AJ Cooke Cup last time out, adding too the Mid-Cheshire District FA Challenge Cup after beating higher-ranked Cuddington, from the Cheshire League, in the final at Lostock Gralam.
