CAMERON Duff continued his impressive start to the season with by claiming a sprint double during last weekend’s Cheshire Track and Field Championships at Macclesfield.

The Vale Royal Athletics Club member won the under 15s boys’ 200m final in a club record 24.12s, then later added the 100m title in the same age category after clocking 12.18s in the final.

“His performances were outstanding,” said Harry Evans, the 14-year-old’s coach.

“He actually had a poor start in the 100m final, but stormed through to win.”

Debutant Holly Weedall made a mark too, grabbing gold in the under 13s girls’ 1,200m in a club record 3.55.83 ahead of teammate Grace Roberts.

She claimed silver too over 800m, equalling a marker set by Megan Huxley a decade earlier by reaching the finish in 2.33.95.

“After what was excellent cross country season, it’s great to see her transfer that form to the track,” said coach Shaun McGrath.

Vale Royal’s Alex Doyle and John Humphries classified first and third respectively in the under 17s boys’ 3,000m, the former claiming a first county track title.

The club celebrated six victories in field events.

Megan Henshall’s throw of 19.59m was enough to win the under 13s girls’ javelin, a feat matched by Jacob Vass for the boys in the same age category.

Megan Evans improved on her own club record to take gold in the under 15s girls’ javelin, throwing 29.91m to push Vale Royal’s Bethan Kelly into second.

Undeterred, Kelly was able to savour success in the discus.

Her best of 25.20m left Connie Seiler to complete another club one-two.

Cara Gibbons took silver in the under 20s women’s 1,500m final after running a personal best, while Molly Billinge did the same to claim bronze in the under 13s girls’ 75m hurdles.

Ryan Stringer, on what is likely to be his final appearance in a Vale Royal vest, helped himself to a silver gong in the senior men’s 200m final.

He followed up with bronze over 100m.

A silver for Will Ashfield, in the boys’ 800m, increased to eight the number of medals won a the two-day event – run as a joint championship with Greater Manchester – by Vale Royal’s under 13s’ section.
