WINSFORD United will be relieved not to have to visit Runcorn Linnets again this season.

Following an FA Vase exit there in October, they were on the receiving end of a heavy defeat on their return at the weekend.

Two goals early on put the North West Counties League leaders on course for a fifth successive Premier Division victory, meaning substitute Michael Jones’ late effort was merely a consolation.

Danny Hudson’s shot was saved at the foot of a post from Blues’ first attempt, while at the other end pressure from goalkeeper Dale Latham prompted an astonishing miss by Antony Hickey for the hosts.

Linnets took the lead on 11 minutes when a miss-kick by Antony Hickey landed at Kurt Sherlock’s feet, and he converted from close range.

And Linnets doubled their tally shortly afterwards when Hickey finished smartly.

A corner on 38 minutes gave Lee Duckworth’s side a chance to get back into the game when custodian Dean Porter brought down Ryan Hibbert, but Danny Hudson’s spot kick was saved by Runcorn’s custodian.

The visitors were made to pay before the break when Ryan Eiselt’s tackle on Sherlock prompted the referee to show a red card after awarding a spot kick.

Michael White converted to make it 3-0.

Latham made a brilliant block from Kyle Hamid’s shot on 71 minutes, but the Linnets man reacted quickly to net a fourth goal from close range.

Blues replied when Porter spilled a free kick, and Jones was on hand to finish.

However Linnets had the final say when Latham’s clearance rebounded into the net off Hickey.
