LEE Duckworth is determined inspire a revival of Winsford United’s fortunes after agreeing to become the club’s manager last week.

The 34-year-old, who switched sides at Barton Stadium in the summer after two seasons with tenants 1874 Northwich, took charge of his first game on Saturday.

“I wanted a crack at this, but I’m still a bit shocked I got the job,” he said.

“When it came up, lots of people asked if I would go for it.

“The more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea.”

He replaces Rob Byrne, who resigned last month.

Kevin Bircumshaw will stay on though as Duckworth’s number two.

Blues’ committee hopes the new boss, who lives in the town, can help to change the club’s image among its neighbours.

“We’ve a long-term plan to create a community club that serves the people of Winsford,” said vice-chairman David Taylor.

“Choosing Lee fits with that. We also feel he’s the right man to keep together what we feel is a good squad.

Duckworth’s first priority will be to end a sequence that includes a single win from the past eight league and cup matches.

It’s a run that has seen Blues slip down the North West Counties League Premier Division table.

“I think we’re a better team than the table suggests,” he said.

“To prove that, we need to be positive and enjoy what we do. I don’t want lads to be afraid when they play – what’s the point of playing if you’re frightened of making a mistake?

“I don’t expect to make lots of changes, maybe a tweak here and there.”

Duckworth, who has made more than 300 appearances for Winsford, plans to combine playing with his duties in the dugout – at least for now.

He added: “I’d like to carry on, which means I need to have somebody on the touchline who I trust. Kev’s that man.

“We want to build something lasting, not just be another couple of names in a long list of Winsford managers in recent seasons.”
