STICKING together - that's the secret of success on court for Winsford Tennis Club's men.

The Knights Grange outfit have completed one of their best campaigns in the South and Mid Cheshire League, with both teams reaching objectives they set at the start of the summer.

Their A team finished first in Division Three, winning 10 of their 14 matches and losing only once, while the second string protected their place at the level below.

"Everybody has contributed," said chairman Chris Mayoh.

"We've had a bigger pool of players to pick from, and it's made a difference to our fortunes."

Winsford A won eight successive matches at the beginning of the season, between April and June, defending a lead over closest rivals Hartford F for the remainder.

Mayoh said: "I can't remember ever starting a year so well.

"It would have avoided defeat, but that's a big ask for any side."

Newcomers Chris Knight and Alex Lerczak have played a starring role, supporting other seeded pair Mayoh and Mark Abbiss.

Meanwhile the B team won four of their final half-dozen matches, losing just one, to ensure survival in Division Four.

"Like with the A team, a number of players mucked in and played their part to make sure the B side stayed up," added Mayoh.

And they are not finished yet; Winsford A are already through to the last four of the league cup, where they could meet their clubmates.
