ATHLETES representing Mid Cheshire reached qualifying markers for this summer’s English Schools’ National Track and Field Championships last weekend.

Harry Lord (Grange) threw 54.93m to win the senior boys’ javelin during the Cheshire Schools’ Championship at Victoria Park in Warrington, while Weaverham High School’s Will Rattray was a comfortable victor in the junior boys’ discus with a best of 36.45m.

St Nicholas High School’s Jenny Pyatt’s winning throw of 37.86m in the inter girls’ discus was another national-standard performance.

On the track, Ben Lee (Grange) missed out on first place in the junior boys’ 800m despite running a personal best.

However his silver medal-winning time, 2:04.4, was fast enough to qualify automatically for the nationals in Gateshead next month.

Meanwhile Mid Cheshire collected gold in nine other categories.

County High School Leftwich’s Logan Fern (long jump) and hammer thrower Daniel Berg, from Weaverham, both won junior boys’ titles.

Sprinter Fisayo Williamson-Taylor won gold for Grange in the inter boys’ 100m final, while Louis Greenwood (Sir John Deane’s College) classified first for discus.

Mia Lowndes (Leftwich) claimed the junior girls’ 100m title in 13.3s, a feat matched by Cransley’s Ellie Jackson in the 75m hurdles.

Another Leftwich student, Ellie Williams, won the shot with 7.93m.

Jade Oakes (St Nicholas) took gold in the inter girls’ high jump.

There were victories in field events among senior girls; Sir John Deane’s College duo Chloe Doggett and Indianna MacKintosh-Rogers won in the pole vault and shot respectively.

Mid Cheshire won more than 40 medals in total; 13 gold, 15 silver and as many bronze.

Alfie Bould, a Vale Royal Athletics Club member representing Ellesmere Port, won the junior boys’ 1,500m final in a personal best 4:19.3.

It’s a victory that qualifies him for the nationals.

Clubmate Josh Betteley, a student at Sandbach School representing South Cheshire, claimed silver in the inter boys’ 1,500m.

Sophie Smith, also in South Cheshire colours, won the inter girl’s 3,000m while Amy Hinchly (Chester) took first prize in the senior girls’ 800m in 2:17.2.
