WINSFORD Swim Team are celebrating a record medals haul at the ASA North West Region Championships, more than doubling their tally at last year’s edition.

They collected 25 in total, five of them gold.

“Our results were fantastic, and proof of what strides we’re making,” said head coach Dan Goodwin.

“We have improved year on year, showing that with hard work, commitment and dedication we can compete with larger clubs.”

Winsford classified ninth, of 41 clubs, in the final points table.

Stockport Metro finished top.

Of Winsford’s 35-strong entry, 22 contested a final.

Jay Cushen won 11 medals, including first place in the under 12s boys’ 1,500m freestyle, 400m and 200m individual medley and 100m butterfly.

He was runner-up in the 400m freestyle and 100m breaststroke, completing a remarkable personal achievement with five bronze gongs.

Alisha Hawkins, who made her debut at the British Championships earlier this year, was a gold medal-winner in the under 14s girls’ 800m freestyle.

She added silver in the 200m butterfly, and bronze in the 400m freestyle and 100m butterfly.

Jordan Gaskell won a hat-trick of silver medals in the under 16s boys’ butterfly over distances of 200m, 100m and 50m.

Two medals went Dan Hulme’s way; silver in the 1,500m freestyle, and bronze for the 400m individual medley.

Winsford’s bronze medal tally was increased by Adam Blackshaw (under 15s boys’ 200m butterfly), Finn Armitt (under 13s boys’ 200m butterfly), Abbie Christopherson (under 12s girls’ 400m freestyle) and Henry Oliver (under 13s boys’ 1,500m freestyle).

They were third too in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay.

The regional championships took place over three weekends, split between pools at Liverpool and Manchester.

Goodwin said: “Not only are we sending a bigger team, but more of our swimmers are reaching finals, winning medals and contributing to our points tally.

“Every one of them played a part in this success.

“It’s been a long three weeks, but they applied themselves so well and fought hard in every single race.”
