WINSFORD’S dismal end to the season continued with a defeat to bottom side Bacup on Saturday, making it one win in 11 Premier Division games for Rob Byrne’s side.

They also lost 1-0 at Colne in midweek.

Brian Matthews levelled twice for the visitors in the second half after Dominic Marie and Yves Zamma goals, but Zama struck again to seal the hosts the points.

On 16 minutes James Rothwell set up Sam Marshall but his shot was wild, while Michael Gervin tested Blues keeper Conor O’Keefe at the other end.

Rothwell was the next to have a chance to open the scoring but his header from Marshall’s corner cleared the bar.

And on 32 minutes it was the hosts who opened the scoring when Gervin set up former Winsford man Marie, who headed into the top corner.

It took Blues until seven minutes after the break to level, when Tom Clarke’s testing high ball was not dealt with by Gareth Wager and Matthews pounced to lift the ball over Bacup stopper Josh Harris.

Another O’Keefe save kept Winsford in it, but on 70 minutes they were behind again when Glodi Kuba-Kuba’s shot was turned home by Zamma.

Matthews was again the man to pull Winsford level on 76 minutes when he converted a deep cross from six yards out.

But with eight minutes remaining Blues’ failure to deal with a long ball proved costly as Zamma fended off a challenge before sliding an effort under O’Keefe.

Winsford: O’Keefe (GK), Byrne, Clarke (Jarrett 56), J Jones, Tierney, Seol, Marshall (Wilshaw 77), Rothwell, Matthews, Egan, Mitchell. Subs not used: Devaney, M Jones.
