CHILDREN will be trained by more qualified coaches at Winsford Cricket Club thanks to a link with Leighton Hospital Prostate Cancer Support Group.

A donation from the charity has helped three members to achieve a qualification already.

They run practice sessions for juniors at the Knights Grange-based club every Tuesday.

“The group have been a great supporter of the club for a number of years so we’re delighted to have their backing as a sponsor,” said chairman Andy Cooper.

He told the Guardian that young cricketers at Winsford were taught about their social responsibility alongside improving their technique and skills on the square.

Gary Steele MBE, from the support group, said he hopes a partnership with the cricket club can make a difference in the town.

He added: “When the club’s committee approached me and outlined their aims for the new season and their plans for the future, which are geared to supporting the local community, I felt it was a great opportunity.

“I want both organisations to develop, and plan to host a number of events at the club that raise awareness of prostate disease.

“The important thing to remember if someone is affected is that they’re not alone.

“There are lots of people who are on a similar journey, and who have had the experiences they face.”

Winsford’s players will wear the group’s logo on their shirts during matches in the TACS Partnership Cheshire League, which starts in a fortnight.

They play again in Division Three after finishing eighth last term.
