North West Counties League, Saturday
St Helens Town 0
Winsford United 1
THEY may have got lucky – Gregory Harrison’s own goal settled the outcome – but Blues’ extended their unbeaten run to remain in contention to be promoted.
After winning at neighbours Witton in the Mid Cheshire FA Senior Cup (see page 46) and then scoring twice in the final four minutes to beat Barnoldwick 48 hours later, any positive result mattered.
The only goal arrived five minutes before the break, Callam Gardner’s corner flicked on by top scorer Andy Hurst to the far post where unlucky Harrison helped the ball in.
Blues had been more likely scorers; Andy Keogh serving Hurst who shot wide, then the midfielder’s header from Lois Maynard’s assist was diverted by a defender to safety.
Dougie Carroll, match-winner at Witton and Barnoldswick, went close too, while substitute Danny Egan headed high from Gardner’s cross.
Winsford Jones (GK), Marley, Maynard, Anderson (Blair 74), Drummond (Duckworth 67), Matthews, Keogh, Bennett, Gardner, Hurst, Carroll (Egan 69). Subs not used McDonnell, McGonigle. Attendance 77.
