Harking back to better days in Northwich

Some of us are becoming old wrinklies, and prone to nostalgia and exaggeration.

As one of those people, I have fading memories of a different Northwich.

It was a bustling town with busy shops and friendly service and you could even buy a tractor, with a choice of two football clubs and two cinemas easy to reach from the bus terminus.

There was no traffic congestion as most people used the bus or bicycle, a brine baths with changing cubicles along the sides of the pool (girls on one side of the pool, boys on the other).

Weekly top bands at the Memorial Hall (girls on one side of the hall, boys on the other).

High employment and low crime, police constables walking round and on bikes, lots of busy pubs and clubs, with everyone having fun and no drugs or fights.

No one had heard of a Vision, Project Management, Action Plan, Night Time Strategy, or even a computer or mobile phone.

Come back, Billy Nomates, and tell me I’m right, or just dreaming.

Billy has been banished as has WHS, you can only read their views and reviews on web sites now. I agree the town is going to the dogs, if it is not already there. But what it still has is a thriving local amateur theatre. Mid Cheshire, Knutsford, Barnton, the Harlequin, Davenham and Sandiway, Moulton are all still going strong as is Vale Royal. But there is a saying that applies to them and our local shops, "Use it or lose it" WHS.
