Don't waste our money on the Salt Works

I READ with interest the article in the July 14 edition of the Guardian about how heritage sites in Northwich are considered at risk.

One of the key ones, which is having millions of pounds of public money thrown at it, is the Lion Salt Works, at Marston.

In these times of recession and economic hardship, it seems ludicrous that public money is being spent on derelict buildings designed to be ephemeral. They were never built to last and the best thing to do is to flatten the site and use the money to support council services for Northwich people.

Make no mistake, once the Government cash cutbacks start to bite, you would be glad of the salt works cash.

One final point – none of the plans for the Lion Salt Works museum and visitor centre have any provision to widen or improve the old bridge over the canal at Marston, surely one of the most dangerous pieces of road on a major route into town. It’s bad enough now, but just imagine how bad it’s going to be in a couple of years when all the buses start taking schoolchildren there for field trips.

That’s an accident waiting to happen, if ever there was one.
