RECENT reports on your move to new premises, the photos and Mark Bevan’s comments on my ‘incredible imitation of the Pathe Gazette cockerel’ brought back many memories.

Over the years, I have imitated the cockerel in all sorts of situations, even on the radio.

In the large group photograph, I picked out Maurice Carver who was the guest speaker in the memorial hall at a meeting of the northwest region of the Institute of Municipal Entertainment, of which I was the chairman.

I remember the lovely Ruth Eaton. She put me wise to the fact that it was traditional for staff writers with a regular column to write under the name of a Shakespeare character. Ruth’s was Olivia.

I well remember too, Mike Talbot-Butler, who was a very good cricketer I believe.

Often in those distant days when I went to the Guardian with news, a local undertaker would be there as well. He would say to me ‘Gwili, I bet you’re glad to see me!’ All the very best to you all in your new home.
