It’s time to wear your poppy with pride again

4:40pm Wednesday 22nd October 2008

May I remind readers that we are approaching Remembrance Sunday (November 9) once again.

Founded in 1921, the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal raises funds to provide financial, emotional and social support to millions of former and serving members of our armed forces and their dependents –- and currently nearly 10.5million people are eligible for support.

The Poppy Appeal is a tangible way that the country can show its gratitude to all those who’ve fought, been wounded or killed in the wars of the last 90 years.

The county council will be playing its part in 2008, as in previous years. Our major office buildings will observe the two-minute silence on November 11 and we will of course have Poppy Appeal collection boxes in public areas.

The 2008 Poppy Appeal starts on October 25, and on behalf of Cheshire County Council, I’d like to encourage your readers to wear a poppy with pride and support the vital work that the Royal British Legion does for our service men and women and their families.

CTY CLR STEVE WILKINSON Chairman, Cheshire County Council
